School Takes First At UIL Academic Meet For Third Consecutive Year
The Canton High School UIL Academic Team recently brought home their third consecutive district 14AAA championship receiving 573 points putting them in first place.
The UIL Academic Team produced nine first place team titles, 13 individual district champions, and will send an unprecedented 37 students to the region meet at Texas A&M-Commerce on April 12.
In addition, eight events were "swept" with Canton placing first through third or fourth in each of those events.
"This is the third consecutive year the academic UIL has received first place. We won by a huge margin and this is a testament to the strong leadership within our faculty and those teachers who volunteer to work with these students in preparing them," Canton High School Principal Max Callahan said. "Also it shows to the excellent leadership in Mrs. (Suzie) Dorman as academic coordinator who is very organized."
"We are extremely proud of our students who have worked hard and take pride in what they are doing," Callahan continued. "It’s a sacrifice of time and energy and most (students) are involved in other activities such as athletics, band, and choir."
Other schools that followed Canton in the district included Van in second place with 249 points, third place went to Athens with 197 points, Brownsboro brought home fourth with 167 points, Chapel Hill had 126 points for fifth place, and Bullard received sixth place with 103 points.
In CX Debate Josh Bennett and Kelsey Chaney received second place, and then placed fourth at state. The team was coached by Linda Teel.
In LD Debate team district champion was Cathy Watkins who is a region qualifier. Watkins is coached by Ginny Sneed.
In poetry Josh Bennett placed sixth, and is coached by Lauren Wycough.
Persuasive speaking participants Lindsay Garrett was district champion, Cathy Watkins placed second and Lesli Garrett placed third. All three are region qualifiers, and are coached by Ginny Sneed.
Informative speaking participants Andrew Wilson placed second, Craig Walters placed third and Lewis Sharp placed fifth. Wilson and Walters are region qualifiers, and are coached by Ginny Sneed.
Overall the speech team placed second.
The accounting team coached by Carol Beal placed first as a team with 624 points and are region qualifiers.
David Dukes was the district champion with 264 points. Katy Harlow placed third with 212 points. Carrie House placed eighth with 156 points and Erin Cope placed 11
th with 99 points.
The current issues team, coached by Susie Dorman, placed first with 68 points and are region qualifiers.
The district champion in current issues is Craig Walters with 29 points. Lindsay Garrett placed second with 27.3 points, Morgan Cummings placed third with 26 points, and Katelyn Deibert placed ninth.
Betsey McCarty coached the number sense team that placed first with 372 points, and are region qualifiers.
Cody Yarbrough is the number sense district champion with 133 points. Brittany Martin placed second with 123 points, while Jessica Cozart and Alex Braz tied for third place with 116 points.
The calculator applications team placed first with 506.5 points and are region qualifiers under the coaching of Betsey McCarty.
Katy Harlow was the district champion with 185 points in calculator applications. Kristi Kennedy placed second with 164 points, Erynn Robinson placed third with 157.5 points and Teddie Owen placed fourth with 157.4 points.
The mathematics team placed first with 546 points and are region qualifiers under the coaching of Betsey McCarty.
Mathematics team member Jessica Cozart was district champion with 194 points, Katy Harlow won second place with 186 points, Andrew Wacaser placed third with 166 points and Alex Braz placed fourth with 116 points.
The computer science team, coached by Kim Allen, placed first with 436 points and are region qualifiers.
Computer science member Preston Fuller was named district champion with 158 points, David Dukes placed second with 140 points, Logan Malone placed third with 138 points and Brian Box placed fourth with 108 points.
Literary criticism, coached by Susie Dorman, also placed first with 190 points and are region qualifiers.
Emily Sterling was named district champion in the literary criticism team with 69 points. Richard Free received third place with 66 points, Teddie Owen received sixth place with 55 points and Stormi James received seventh place with 54 points.
The social studies team received first place with 210 points and are region qualifiers. The team is coached by Susie Dorman.
Kyle Vogt was named social studies district champion with 94 points, Martin Allen received second place with 84.8 points, Preston Hutcherson received third place with 84 points and Josh McCord received seventh place with 59.8 points.
The spelling and vocabulary team received first place as a team with 247 points and are region qualifiers. The team is coached by Brittani Engebretson.
Jessica Cozart was named district champion of the spelling and vocabulary team with 97 points. Brittany Martin received fourth place with 78 points, Stephanie Zachary placed fifth with 72 points, Kaitie Gummelt placed seventh with 63 points, Eric Vogt placed eighth with 61 points and Brett Callan placed 11
th with 53 points.
The journalism team placed second as a team with 82 points.
Jessica Peterson was named district champion and a region qualifier of the news writing.
Whitney Weesner placed second and Bethany Stiefer placed third in news writing. Both are region qualifiers. The news writing team is coached by Susie Dorman.
In editorial writing Jessica Peterson placed second and Emily Sterling placed fourth. Peterson is a region qualifier and Sterling is an alternate. The editorial writing members are coached by Susie Dorman.
The feature writing team is coached by Susie Dorman. Jessica Peterson placed fifth in feature writing.
In headline writing Jessica Peterson was named district champion and region qualifier. Emily Sterling placed sixth. Susie Dorman is the headline writing coach.
In computer applications Karlie Lindley placed third and is region qualifier. She is coached by Stephanie Davidson.
In ready writing Michelle Bryant placed third and Emily Sterling placed fourth. Bryant is a region qualifier and Sterling is region alternate. Stokes Duty is the ready writing coach.
In one act play Stormi James and Brett Callan received Honorable Mention, Josh Bennett and Logan Malone received All-Star Cast. One Act Play Director is Lauren Wycough.
