Police Arrest Two Men For Heroin
Two men were arrested on drug charges after a traffic stop on Interstate 20 revealed they were in possession of heroin.
Canton Police Officer Heath Burton was on patrol when he stopped a 2003 Saturn Ion, eastbound at the 530 mile marker last Thursday, for failure to maintain a single lane and for almost striking a concrete barrier.
The driver Andrew Nick Garrett, 42, Tyler, was observed as being "extremely nervous."
His passenger Shane Brandon Patching, 34, Longview, was observed as being "extremely nervous" too.
According to the report, Burton asked Garrett if he was okay because he was shaking so much and he advised he was.
After questioning the two, both gave different stories on where they had been during the day.
After asking for consent to search the vehicle Garrett told Burton "no."
Burton then called for Sergeant Steve Hall and his K-9 partner Rex.
After patting down the men, Burton found a syringe in the right front pocket of Patching’s pants.
According to the report, "after retrieving the syringe out of his pocket it was discovered that it was loaded with a clear brown substance."
Patching was then placed under arrest for possession of a controlled substance.
When Rex arrived Garrett advised there was some heroin in the vehicle in a wooden box. Rex then alerted on the passenger side door of the vehicle.
After probable cause was found search of the vehicle revealed numerous syringes throughout the vehicle, several empty capsules and five capsules containing a brown substance believed to be heroin.
Garrett was then placed into custody and charged with possession of a controlled substance penalty group one less than one gram.
Patching was charged with possession of a controlled substance, penalty group one, greater than one gram less than four grams.
