Robbery Suspect Still At Large

Julie Vaughan, Editor

Descriptions are being narrowed down in the robbery of the Beall’s Department Store, located on State Highway 243 in Canton, that occurred late last Tuesday evening.
Canton Police say an armed man entered the store at around 6 p.m. with what appeared to be an automatic handgun and held up the store at gun point.
The robber, which is described by Canton Police Officer Charlie Brown at around 5’9" to 5’10" in height, is in his mid 20s to early 30s, and of a slender build with dark hair. He was also described as wearing white long pants, a dark blue Polo style shirt with a white stripe down each side of the sleeve, and a blue ball cap.
Brown said the suspect kept the gun hidden under his shirt until he was at the counter.
“Once he got up to the counter he laid the gun over the edge of the counter,” Brown said.
The store clerk began taking money out of the cash register starting with the larger bills first, Brown explained.
“When the store clerk reached for the ones (one dollar bills) he (the suspect) said that was enough,” Brown said.
The suspect got away with an estimated $776.
The suspect then fled the scene leaving in a maroon Ford F-150 extended cab pickup.
Brown said the vehicle is described by witnesses as having no custom work.
Canton Police Chief Michael Echols said it is believed that the suspect was working alone and did not have anyone else in the vehicle with him when he left the scene.
Echols said investigators are now working on enhancing video images to positively identify the suspect.
Anyone with information on this robbery is asked to call the Canton Police Department at (903) 567-4991.
