MARTINS MILL—The Martins Mill Independent School District Board of Trustees heard from student Clark Watters during their regular meeting Monday night. Watters addressed the board concerning a project he would like to begin. Watters, who is a Boy Scout, is working on becoming an Eagle Scout and the project would help him achieve that goal.

Watters is planning to construct a pitching and putting green for the district and community. He suggested two different locations. One being at the old baseball field and the other being at Mustang Park.

"I think Mustang Park would be a great location. It could be there with the other sports facilities," said superintendent Todd Schneider.

"I will be holding fund-raisers and will be taking donations for the project. I will also be looking for volunteers. There will be other Boy Scouts helping as well," said Watters.

Though the board was in full support of Watters’ project, there was some concern with the school’s liability.

"We are somewhat liable for all the facilities at the park and this one would not have any greater liability than the others," said Schneider.

The board approved Watters proposal so that he may move forward with the project.

In other business, the board:

-approved professional employee contracts for 2008-2009.

-approved the purchase of video conferencing material.

-approved the exemption policy.

-approved co-op application.

-approved the second reading of Update 81.

-approved the school calendar for 2008-2009.

-approved substitute Sherry Alvis and substitute bus driver Donald Strimpel.

-approved the adoption of textbooks.

-heard the superintendent’s report which including recognition of the elementary school as a Distinguished Campus.

"There are 12,000 schools in the state. Not districts, campuses and only 134 schools in the state received this designation. There were only five schools in our region that received it," said Schneider.

The report also included information on Senate Bill 9, the status of Bus #4 which is not in working order at this time, track repairs, information on trustee terms and transition to a November election, new 403B Plan requirements and information about the band dinner on March 27.

The board also recognized Austin Davis who has been elected as a state FCCLA officer. Austin will serve as the vice-president of finance.
