FRUITVALE—Bruce Congleton has resigned as superintendent of Fruitvale ISD after approximately 10 months in that position.
Congleton’s letter of resignation and a voluntary exit agreement was accepted by the Fruitvale ISD School Board in a special called meeting on March 17. Fruitvale Elementary School Principal Peggy Brumit is serving as acting superintendent for an indefinite time, an administration office employee said Wednesday.
The school board was scheduled to meet Thursday afternoon in another special called meeting. A discussion with Dr. Russell Marshall with Arrow Educational Search about the search process for a new superintendent was the only item on the agenda.
Congleton was not present at the March 17 meeting.
The school district was on spring break the previous week and attempts to reach Congleton, school board president Rod Hoffpauir or anyone at the school administration office were unsuccessful.
During the special meeting, the board went into closed session and returned to open session about one hour later to accept Congleton’s resignation.
In recent weeks, the board had conducted lengthy closed sessions to discuss administrative evaluations, taking action on all contracts except that of Congleton.
The only action the board took regarding the superintendent position was approving a new appraisal instrument for superintendent evaluation. That decision was made during the regular monthly meeting held on March 13.
Before being hired as Fruitvale ISD superintendent, Congleton served as vice principal and, later, principal of Canton Junior High from 1996 to 2007.
Prior to that, he was a teacher and coach at Canton ISD from 1986 to 1996, and served as a teacher and coach at Grand Saline ISD during the 1985-1986 school year.
