Martins Mill Fifth Graders Learn About Colonial Period
Martins Mill fifth graders participated in Colonial Days, an annual event, organized by teachers Theresa King and Jane McFarland.
Activities included making Johnny Cakes, homemade butter, weaving, building log cabin Christmas ornaments, learning to write in Caligraphy with a quill pin, and grinding corn.
They also played with Colonial paper dolls, painted Dutch designs, learned to make maple candy, cracked various nuts for their candy using rocks, and played Colonial-type games.
All 36 students were also graded on their Colonial period costumes.
Organizer Mrs. King said students also stood for a while during their lunch period and didn’t speak for a certain amount of time, like the Colonial children did, as part of the project.
The fifth grade class is also known for their traditional wax museum and art show, which are annual events.
