Dead Horse Found Dumped
GRAND SALINE—The carcass of a Palomino horse was discovered near a creek north of Grand Saline on Tuesday morning.
Van Zandt County Precinct 1 Constable Mickey Henson said witnesses have told him the dead horse was dumped about 10 feet from the creek off Van Zandt County Road 1804.
“That has always been a real problematic road for illegal trash dumping, and we have had a lot of problems there with that, but this is the first time I’ve heard of a horse being dumped down there,” he said.
Henson said he got the initial report of the horse carcass being discovered there on Tuesday about 8:30 a.m., but that the investigation indicates the horse may have been there since Sunday.
“It looked like the person responsible pulled the horse out of the trailer and when it hit the ground, that was where he left it,” Henson said.
The constable added that the offense is a state jail felony because it potentially could pollute the creek and groundwater. Decomposing mammals release harmful bacteria, which can find their way into water sources.
Henson said he has a suspect and is pursuing felony charges.
“Just what the horse died from, we don’t know at this time,” he said.
Henson added that county crews buried the horse on Wednesday.
