Van Zandt County Sheriff R.P. "Pat" Burnett said recently that there have been numerous burglaries and thefts in the southwest portion of the county and that county residents should be aware of their surroundings.
"I have said this many times and cannot say it enough, citizens need to keep a watch on their property and their neighbor’s property," said Burnett.
He said that copper wiring and electrical items are still a target of these criminals.
"Some electrical meter boxes have been taken. Damage is being done to the breaker boxes and wires are being cut," said Burnett.
Burnett said that one burglary victim on VZCR 2317 was able to get a description of a possible suspect.
"This victim was talking on the phone and the line went dead. She looked out her window and saw a white male in his 20s, average height and build, running to an older white car. The vehicle headed toward Kaufman County," said Burnett.
Burnett said the victim then discovered her electric meter had been pulled out and copper wiring had been cut.
"If you see anyone around electric meters don’t assume it is a repairman," said Burnett.
Burnett said that anyone who sees a suspicious person or vehicle should make note.
"I would even say to take a picture of the suspect if you can. If it is someone who is not from that area, when you start taking pictures or call attention to them they are going to leave quickly," said Burnett.
Burnett said to try to get a description of persons and vehicles including license plate numbers.
"Get as much information as you can but do not put yourself in harm’s way," said Burnett.
