Poster Contest Winners Named

Donna Limberger, Staff Writer

Van Independent School District has numerous construction projects going on right now and one of those projects is happening in the middle of the intermediate school campus.

Recently the school had a construction safety poster contest, which was sponsored by Jackson Brothers Construction, and winning posters will be laminated and hung on the fence surrounding the site.

"Although there is a high fence totally surrounding the site, we are using this opportunity to teach our students about construction site safety," said Van Intermediate Principal Marty Moore.

Moore said that teachers spent approximately two weeks teaching the students key points of construction safety.

"We went over things such as use of protective gear worn by workers, operation of big machinery, as well as other aspects of site safety," said Moore.

Moore said that every child in the second and third grades made a poster and each classroom named a winner.

"We had 16 classroom winners and then three top winners. We are hanging the winning posters on the fence to serve as a reminder to children to stay away from the area. Our children are well supervised during recess periods but a lot of children use our facilities after school hours. These posters will serve also as a reminder to those children to stay away from the construction area," said Moore.

Moore said that Jackson Brothers Construction provided Wal-Mart gift cards for the first, second and third place winners.

She also said that every child received a Van Vandal Bracelet.
