Local Developer Speaks At Revitalization Meeting

Donna Limberger, Staff Writer

The Downtown Revitalization committee of Van (DRC) met November 21, 2009 for a communication workshop. The group is working on improving the image and appearance of Van. Guest speakers included Brooks Gremmels founder of the Ben Wheeler Art and Historical Foundation; Bryan Brent, consultant with Thoughts, Words, and Images (TWI); and Shane Shepard, the Main Street/Community Development Director of the City of Winnsboro.

Gremmels shared his story of developing Ben Wheeler.

"There is no stopping point in a town project. The next generation must pick it up," said Gremmels.

He told the group about the different businesses that have returned or have opened in Ben Wheeler including a knife maker shop, a high-end antique shop, clothing store, restaurant and The County Line publisher’s office.

Gremmels said that the aim in developing a city should always be to respect the town and the work that has gone on before.

"The project is just the beginning stage of any revitalization. Compromise is the key. Businesses must cooperate with each other. There is strength in numbers. Leaders must bring the project to the people," said Gremmels.

Brent then spoke to the group and emphasized the importance of communication in launching a project such as revitalizing downtown Van.

"The leaders must build community involvement, tell the story or vision, work the plan and focus on the goal," said Brent.

Shepard addressed the group saying that when the Main street project was initiated in Winnsboro, they choose to emphasize the quality of life their city had to offer.

"Sidewalks and tax abatements were the most important items of interest to the business owners and restoration of building exteriors was also part of the project," said Shepard.

He discussed the numerous programs available that support different phases of a Main Street project and the steps needed to implement the support.

The DRC needs positive commitment from Van citizens who are interested in promoting this project. Packets are being developed so that Van will be aware of the group’s work and can participate.
