He was in the military from 1951 to 1954, serving in the Marines. He reached the rank of sergeant, receiving a purple heart, four battle stars and five campaign ribbons prior to his honorable discharge.
Educated at Edgewood High School, Henderson County Junior College and East Texas State University, Ellis became a shoe salesman for Weyenberg Shoes for 14 years in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi, and was in the top 10 percent of volumn sales in the USA.
He opened the Fairway Shoe Store in Wills Point in 1969 and the Fairway Security Store in 1986.
Ellis has been very involved in community activities, serving for many years with the Historical Society, chamber of commerce, city council, Wills Point ISD board, economic development committee, Church of Christ teacher and elder, Rotary Club, Rockhill Cemetery Association board, White Rose Cemetery board, American Cancer Society, Van Zandt County Appraisal Review board, county historical commission, county library special representative, and Edgewood Historical Society.
Over the years, he has received numerous awards, including Van Zandt County Outstanding Citizen of the Year in 1984.
The guest speaker for the banquet was Ray Stone, producer of the Dallas Cowboys Football Report for 33 years.
He told some interesting stories about famous Cowboys players, and then narrated a lengthy slide show and presentation about the values of “Shopping at Home.”
Chamber chairman Jeff Pennington spoke briefly about plans for completion of the Lester Park Phase III, and said an application has been made for a $200,000 grant.
The banquet opened with a special patriotic medley of songs by the Russell Memorial United Methodist Church Chancel Choir, directed by Dr. Bob Gilbreth.
A tasty meal was catered by Double T Steak House of Terrell.
A planned auction of Cowboys memorabilia was postponed due to the length of the banquet, and will be held in September.
