The Texas Department of Public Safety is looking for information regarding a hit-and-run accident that occurred on VZCR 3707 at approximately 8:40 p.m. Friday, April 18.
Joe Huron, 13, of Wills Point, was walking west in the ditch of VZCR 3707, when an eastbound car left the road traveling toward him.
Huron ran into the road to avoid the car, but the vehicle swerved to miss a mailbox and hit the eighth grade student.
The impact knocked Huron backward, breaking bones in his lower leg. The car kept going toward FM 47. It is unknown which direction the car turned.
Both Huron and a witness that passed the vehicle before finding the victim describe what DPS believes is a dark-colored Pontiac.
"The vehicle will possibly have damage in the headlight area on the right (passenger) side," said DPS trooper Odie Phillips.
"We’d love to talk to anyone that may know something. Whether they know a car that fits the description, or have heard somebody talking, any information would be greatly appreciated."
Huron, according to his mother Billie Callahan, was care-flighted to Parkland Hospital, and released on Sunday night.
"Everyone (at the scene of the accident) was so great," Callahan said. "I just want to thank the Wills Point fire and police department, the DPS and the sheriffs department. Everyone was so good to Joe. They were so professional."
Huron will require surgery to repair the bones in his leg and the family has set up an account to help with expenses.
Anyone able to help can contact Citizens National Bank regarding the Joe Huron Benefit Account.
