Funday Organizers Honored By Chief
Brent Deen and Brandon Corbett were recognized at the regular city council meeting held on Tuesday. The pair were awarded plaques by police chief Scott Johnson for their efforts in organizing the Funday on Sunday held at Lester Park. Johnson described the event as a huge success, and said plans were being made to make it an annual event.
In other council business, a resolution supporting the south central high-speed rail corridor was tabled until next month’s meeting. Councilwoman Deby Frye raised concerns about the location and size of the proposed corridor and the effect it would have on the downtown area. The council asked for more information before approving the resolution.
The council did approve the 2008 tax roll as recommended by the Van Zandt County Appraisal District.
The council also approved a resolution regarding a regional solid waste grant. The resolution gave approval to financial secretary Tracey Ingram to make a presentation to the East Texas Council of Governments as part of the grant process. The grant would provide $7,000 for dumpsters to be used during City-Wide Cleanup Week in April.
Finally, the council approved empowering the mayor and city manager to execute a contract regarding the acceptance of funds from the Lester Park Trust Fund on behalf of the city.
