High School Burglarized

Staff Writer

Police and Wills Point ISD officials are referring to a recent burglary at the high school as a possible inside job in more ways than one, as the burglars apparently allowed themselves to be locked inside on Sunday night.

"There was a theater performance on Sunday evening and we think whoever did this was on the inside the whole time," said police officer J.D. Morris. "There was no sign of forced entry, and all of the locks have been changed."

An alarm went off in the early morning hours on Monday, but officers saw no persons, or signs of entry from the outside.

"We get lots of false alarms with alarm systems like that," Morris said. "Cold weather like we had that night will cause false alarms."

When administrators arrived on Monday morning however, the office area of the school had been broken into.

"Whoever it was knew exactly what they were looking for, and exactly where to look," Morris said.

A locked cabinet was broken into, and a cash box kept there was missing. The burglar also attempted to break into a "vault closet" in the same area, but was unsuccessful.

"Normally we keep no cash on any of the campuses," said superintendent Joe Oliver. "It just so happened that some fund-raiser money came in late on Friday, and was still there. We make deposits on a daily basis."

Morris added that an envelope containing approximately $180 was found outside, but that the thief did get away with an unspecified amount.

"At this time we believe that someone remained in the building after the performance on Sunday evening, and tripped the alarm exiting the building," Morris said, and added that there were no suspects, but the matter is under investigation.
