Canton Eagles Fall In The Third Round, 35-6 To Celina

Randal Brewer, Sports Editor

In the first half  of the Canton Eagles third round matchup with the Celina Bobcats, the Eagles enjoyed first downs at the Celina 6, 16, and 29-yard lines, but came away with zero points, in their 35-6 loss at Homer Johnson Stdaium in Garland on Friday night. After each of those possessions was turned away, the Celina offense marched down the field and scored, picking up total of 362 yard rushing, along the way.

On Canton's second possession of the game, they moved from their own 33 to the Bobcat six in five plays, but a Casey Bell pass on second-and-goal from the nine was intercepted, and Celina took over on their own four-yard-line.

It looked as if the Canton defense would hold Celina there, but on third-and-11 from the three, Celina quarterback Seth Davis found a crease on the right side for a 59-yard gain to the Eagle 38. Sophomore running back Charley Waldrep took over from there, carrying four straight times, the fourth resulting in a ten-yard touchdown run. Dru Prosser added the point after, and Celina led, 7-0.

On their next possession, Canton used a 29-yard pass from Bell to Travis Termin to set up a first-and-ten at the Bobcat 16, but they could get no closer, as Bell was thrown for a loss on fourth-and-eleven from the 17. Celina then began a nine-play, 73-yard scoring drive that included a fourth-and-one conversion from their own 36. Davis hit Lance Clark with a 29-yard touchdown pass with 7:04 left in the half. Prosser was good on the kick, and Celina led 14-0.

The oddest play of the season may have occured on the following kickoff, as Celina attempted an onside kick placing a low kick about 15 yards deep on the sideline. A streaking Waldrep caught the ball in the air, but was called for interference as a Canton player was signaling for a fair catch. The resulting penalty gave the Eagles the ball at the Bobcat 42. They moved to the 29, but began a rapid march backward from there. Two penalties and three negative plays later, and Canton faced a fourth-and-45 from their own 32.

Celina started the next possession at their own 34, and marched 66 yards in nine plays to score on a six-yard run by Waldrep, with :50 left in the half. Prosser added the point after, and Celina led 21-0 at the half.

Celina brought the hammer and nails out of the locker room with them to begin the second. After receiving the second half kick, they used three plays to go 62 yard for their fourht touchdown. This time is was Prosser from the quarterback position on a 48-yard run. He added the extra point, and after 1:24 was gone in the third quarter, the lead was 28-0 Celina.

Canton went on its best drive of the night when they received the kickoff. Running the option, Bell kept the ball for runs of 7, 5, and 10. He also threw to Justin Huff for 7, and to Micheal Prox for 14. Facinga fourth-and-four from the 19 though, Bell was stopped for no gain, and the ball went over on downs.

Celina added a touchdown in the fourth quarter, this one on a 55-yard pass from Prosser to Troy McCartney. Prosser kicked again, and Celina held a 35-0 lead.

Canton finally got on the board on their next possession. Starting near mid field due to a personal fould on the extra point, Bell used passes to Prox for 12-yards, and to Huff for 24, to move the ball to the Bobcat 4. Zack Cummings scored from there, but the two-point try failed, and with 4:02 left the score was 35-6.

The Canton Eagles finish the 2006 season with a 8-5 record, while Celina will move on to play the winner of the Brownsboro versus Pilot Point matchup.
