Austin Smith, of Dallas, was recently drafted in the fifth round by the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League. Smith is the grandson of Barry and Carolyn Smith of Canton, and son of Chuck Smith, formerly of Edgewood, and DeeAnna Smith, formerly of Canton.
Austin lived in Canton from birth until the age of four. He started playing hockey after attending one of the Star’s youth camps that introduced players to the sport. He worked his way up through the Storm and Alliance programs at the position of right wing and played at Jesuit for two seasons.
In the 2005-2006 season, Smith was voted Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year. Last season Smith attended Gunnery Prep School in Washington, Conn., where he graduated in May of 2007 with honor roll status academically. He will be playing with the British Columbia Hockey League in Penticton, BC during the 2007-2008 season, and then will head to Colgate University where he received a full scholarship.
Smith will be attending the Dallas Star’s Rookie Camp this summer scheduled for the week of July 22.
