Eagles Continue Upbeat Workouts

Randal Brewer, Sports Editor

The best first week of practice the Eagles have had since Lance Angel has been at the school has worked its way into the second week.

"We had a great first day in pads," said the head coach, beginning his fourth season as the Eagles head coach. "The kids really got after it."

The Eagles dressed in pads last Friday, and after a break in the first practice on Monday, returned in pads in the second workout.

In addition to the workouts, the team is having film sessions twice a week.

"We film every practice," Angel explained. "We believe it is an essential teaching tool in becoming a better a football player."

The second week of practice will wind up with a scrimmage against the Farmersville Farmers on August 15. After winning a state title in 2007, the Farmers were the 13-3A champions last year, and return eight starters on both sides of the ball.

"Farmersville will be a good scrimmage for us," Angel said of the first contest against an opponent. "It will be physical, and that’s the type of scrimmage we need.

"Scrimmages are to find out who can block, run and tackle and be disciplined in their assignments. We will be pretty basic on both sides of the ball.

"Offensively, we are looking for the things we have worked on for two weeks to carry over to a game-like situation. Defensively we need to be aggressive and physical."

The Eagles will be in Mabank on Thursday, August 20 prior to the season-opener on August 28 when Canton will travel to Commerce.
