Harmony Powers Past Bulldogs In Seocnd Half

Staff Writer

HARMONY— The Edgewood Bulldogs traveled to Harmony where the Eagles proved to be a hostile host in trouncing them 63-40.

A humid and miserable night proved to be just that for the Bulldogs. However, the game started strong for Edgewood as the Bulldogs took the opening kick and drove down and scored at the 9:52 mark on the arm of Weston Jameson.

The Edgewood quarterback was 4-for-6, accounting for 59 yards of the nine-play, 64-yard drive where he capped it with a 5-yard swing pass to Porter Treadway. The two-point conversion was no good when Levi Weaver was stopped just shy of the goal line.

The kickoff to Harmony was returned to their own 45-yard line. The Eagles first play from scrimmageA was a 2-yard loss constructed by Nick Schulz, while the second play resulted in a 3-yard loss and a fumble where Joseph Reed came up with the ball to give the Bulldogs good field.

However, this possession would not be as prosperous as three successive plays resulted in negative yardage. The Bulldogs decided to go for the first with 20 yards to go from the 34. Jameson tried to scramble as he was under heavy pressure and was stripped of the ball where Kolby Hogan recovered and returned it for a TD.

However, it was called back on a clipping penalty and the Eagles took over at the Bulldog 41. The Eagles promptly made the Bulldogs pay with a five-play scoring drive capped by Joe Ross passing to Luke Laminack for 6 yards. With the PAT good, Harmony lead 7-6 at the 5:20 mark in the first quarter.

The ensuing kick went to Clay Haltom who took the ball at his own 20-yard line and returned it 73 yards to the Eagle 7-yard line.

After a holding call moved them back to the 17, a bad snap moved Edgewood back to the 27. Jameson took the snap and threw it over the middle to Darrius Rogers for the second score on the night. The two-point conversion failed and the Bulldogs led 12-7 with 3:22 to play in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs stopped Harmony in its tracks with a quick three-and-out and took the punt at their own 21-yard line.

The ’Dogs began to move the ball when a penalty moved them back into a second-and-16. Jameson was forced scramble and found a way to get 15 yards to bring up third-and-1 as the first quarter ended at Harmony’s 38-yard line.

The second quarter got under way with the Bulldogs moving the ball at small clips of five to seven yards. Several players got touches and converted fourth downs to continue the drive along

Eventually, Rogers hauled in a 13-yard TD catch from Jameson. The two-point conversion was good and made it 20-7 with just over eight minutes left in the half.

This was an especially impressive drive as it went 15 plays and 79 yards with the Bulldogs converting three fourth downs, including the scoring play.

As the Eagles were able to do all night, they took a Clay Haltom kick and returned it into Bulldog territory where they started on the ’Dogs 40.

With two quick pass plays to Jordan Argabright netting 35 yards, Laminack did the rest and scored the TD with 6:59 still showing on the clock. The PAT snap was mishandled, but Bunn made the best of a bad situation and passed the ball to Donavon Ricks for the two-point conversion to make it 20-15.

After a quiet possession netted only a few yards, Jameson quick-kicked the ball down to Harmony’s 18-yard line where the Eagles were unable to do anything either. After a penalty pushed them even deeper into their end, the punt snap went over the punter’s head and rolled out-of-bounds, resulting in a safety to give the Bulldogs a 22-15 lead at the 2:19 mark.

On the free kick, the Bulldogs took over in Harmony’s end of the field and quickly marched down for the score with Jameson connecting to his fellow senior teammate Aaron Mclellan from seven yards out.

The PAT kick from Brown was no good and the Bulldogs led 28-15.

However, the Eagles still wanted to play ball and Laminack proved it by taking a third-and-10 from his own 40 and turning it into a 60-yard TD. The PAT was good to make the score 28-22 with 58 seconds to play in the half.

The ensuing kickoff would go to Clay Haltom who went left first and then reversed field. As he was switching hands to go to the right, he fumbled and Harmony would pounce on it on the 4-yard line with 39 seconds to go.

The first down play went nowhere as Levi Weaver would have nothing of it and stopped them for a loss. After a spike of the ball to stop the clock, Ross would roll to his right and pass for the TD. The PAT was good and gave the hometown boys the halftime lead of 29-28.

At the half, the Bulldogs led total offense, 312 to Harmony’s 138.

The second half started much the same way the first ended — Harmony taking the kickoff and returning it for big yards with Arreola getting it to the Bulldogs 38-yard line.

After a penalty moved them back to the 43, the Bulldogs seem to stiffen and force them to punt. However, Harmony lined up and went for it on fourth-and-15 where Ross connected with Bunn for 43 yards and a TD.

The PAT was no good by Arreola (his only miss on the night) and left the Bulldogs to climb uphill from a 35-28 deficit.

The kickoff was returned to the 18 by Haltom and this drive is where the wheels seemed to come off. On second down, the snap sailed over Jameson’s head and he was unable to recover it.

Harmony made quick work of the mess to score on the single-play, four-yard drive that put Harmony up 42-28.

However, there was still fight in the Bulldogs as Jameson drove them down methodically, scrambling on a fourth-and-11 to get a first down. He then finished the drive off with a 7-yard run to score with 3:27 to go in the third

The two-point conversion would fail and the Bulldogs would trail 42-34. However, the Eagles would not relent as they would score on six straight possessions, four in the second half.

With Weaver adding a 14-yard TD late to get the score to 56-40, that would be as close as the Bulldogs could get on the night. Arreola would add one of his own from 35 yards out and thus finish the scoring at 63-40.

The Bulldogs will host another high-octane team in the Canton Eagles this Friday night at IT James Memorial Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
