Bobcats Open Home Tourney With Win

FRUITVALE — Less than 48 hours after a big win over Como-Pickton, the Fruitvale Bobcats opened their home tournament Thursday with a 52-13 thrashing of Heritage Christian.

Tyler Yates had 12 points to lead the Bobcats, who ran out to a 17-2 lead after the first quarter of play.

Ian McCann added 10 points and Caleb Westbrook and Randy Mejia scored nine points each.

Also contributing on the scoresheet were James White with five, Vincent Jones with four, Ryan McGlothlin with two and Hunter Houser with one. The Bobcats advanced to meet Grand Saline, a winner over A+ Academy.

In Tuesday’s 47-37 win, Yates, McCann and Westbrook all hit double figures. Yates led with 19, McCann added 16 and Westbrook pumped in 10 points.

Mejia and McGlothlin added two points each.

McCann also had six blocked shots and pulled down 12 rebounds, and McGlothlin grabbed seven, which were all on the defensive end of the court. Westbrook tallied five assists and four steals, and the Bobcats came up with 19 steals total in the contest.

Grand Saline

Grand Saline routed the A+ Academy behind Sam Joyce’s 17 points. Joyce was the only Indian in double figures, but six of his teamates scored six or more. Anthony Jackson and Brandon Creel each scored eight, while Jordan Tittle and Daniel Galvan both had seven. Taylor Phelps and Kyle Jeahey scored six apiece. Wood added three.

Prior to tournament play, the Indians fell to the Canton Eagles 57-44. Grand Saline held a 29-24 lead at the half, but were outscored 33-15 in the second half, including a 16-4 fourth quarter.

Phelps led the scoring with 12, followed by Jackson with 10. Lucas Akins had seven, Joyce six, and Tittle added three. Creel, Galvan and Keahey all score two.
