Bulldogs Land Last Blow Against Wills Point, Take Trophy
The Edgewood Bulldogs and Wills Point fought an overtime barnburner in the Edgewood Tournament championship, with the Bulldogs prevailing 72-69.
"It was a back-and-forth game," said head coach Jay Jameson. "We hit some big shots. Wills Point has got a really good team."
The Tigers were good enough to hold a six-point lead going into the fourth quarter, but Darrius Rogers (31 points) hit two of his eight fourth quarter points in the final second to tie the game at 59 and force overtime.
Dillon Parmer hit a late 3-pointer to break a 69-69 tie in the extra period. Wills Point had the ball for a final shot, but couldn’t answer.
Calvin King scored 22 for the Bulldogs and Parmer had 14. Josh Sharff scored four and Wyatt McBride added one.
The Bulldogs defeated Neches in the opening round70-38. Rogers scored 19 of his game-high 25 in the second quarter when the Bulldogs outscored Neches 30-9.
Every Bulldog registered points in a 69-58 win over Bonham in the second round, but Rogers and Parmer combined for 38, scoring 19 apiece.
In the semifinals, the Bulldogs defeated Martins Mill 50-37. Rogers (25) and King (19) combined for 44 of the 50.
Martins Mill’s Boot Brantley led the Mustangs with 14, followed by Cody Kight with seven, David Fox, six; Eli Stephens, five; Seth Stephens, three and Dalton Flowers two.
The Mustangs advanced to the semifinals with a 54-50 win over Caddo Mills.
Following the tournament win, the Bulldogs defeated Alba-Golden, 71-48. After trailing 25-24 at the half, the scored 27 in the third to pull away for the win.
Rogers again led the way with 22 points. Sharff added 14, while Gabe Milton put in nine, followed by Palmer and King with eight apiece, Wyatt McBride and Austin Fleming with three each, Kiin Tuma with two and Trey Brown with one point.
The Bulldogs were in Wills Point for tournament action on Thursday through Saturday.
