The Van Lady Vandals got their first district win last Friday night over Chapel Hill, 66-44, and followed that up with 53-37 win over Brownsboro on Tuesday. The two wins improve the Lady Vandals to 2-4 district mark.

Cheyenne Massey hit three first quarter 3-point shots to help the Lady Vandals to an 18-11 lead over the Lady Bulldogs of Chapel Hill. Shannon Hullum also added five of her 10 points for the game in the first.

Brittany Wood scored all five of her points in the second quarter, as the Lady Vandals outscored Chapel Hill, 17-9 in the quarter, and led 35-20 at the half.

Sarah Milewski scored six of her team-high 14 points in the third. Milewski was 6-of-10 from the line on a night when the Lady Vandals were 14-of-24 as a team.

Lauren Kellam added eight points for Van, followed by Nicole Black, with six; Brittany Wood, five; Shelby Harris and Chasity Smith, with four each; and Caitlin Galloway and Seleah Wilkinson, two apiece.

In the win over Brownsboro on Tuesday, Milewski and Hullum combined for 14 first-quarter points, including 4-of-4 from the line from each of them, and Van built a 17-11 lead.

The Lady Bears answered back in the second quarter, and closed to within one by the half, at 26-25.

Van regained the upper hand in the third, taking a 42-34 lead into the fourth quarter. They held the Lady Bears to three points in the final frame to win their second district game.

Milewski finished with 17 points, and Hullum tallied 14. Kellam scored eight; Massey, six; and Smith five.

The win over Chapel Hill followed a 56-36 loss to the Canton Eaglettes, in which the Lady Vandals held a 7-5 first quarter lead. Van was held to two points in the second quarter, though, while Canton poured in 15 points to take a 20-9 halftime lead.

Milewski scored 10 fourth quarter points, but it wasn’t enough to keep pace with Canton, which has a precarious hold on the third spot in the playoff race.

The Lady Vandals moved into a tie with Brownsboro in the district race. Going into Tuesday’s games, Bullard was in first place with a 5-0 record, and they were to face second place Athens at 4-1. Canton was in third place at 3-2, and hosted 0-5 Chapel Hill.

The Lady Vandals travel to Bullard on Friday.
