Tigers Stay In District Title Race

Randal Brewer, Sports Editor

The Wills Point Tiger varsity baseball team stayed in the race for a district championship with an 11-4 win over Quinlan on Tuesday night. The win kept Wills Point on pace with the Royse City Bulldogs at 5-1 in district.

Thunderstorms forced the game to be moved from the Panthers home field to Wills Point, and even then the teams experienced a 20-minute delay due to lightening.

By the that time, though, the lightening in Austen Bardin’s bat had helped give Wills Point a 7-1 lead. Batting wit the bases loaded in the fourth, Bardin hit a shot down the right-field line, driving in three runs.

Wills Kerwin added to the lead in the sixth with a three-run double.

Connor McPherson got the start for the Tigers and pitched 4-1/3 strong inning before the lightening moved in. After the long delay, McPherson was lifted having given up only one unearned run.

Garrett Kinney and Colton Newton combined to finish the game with Newton getting the save, and McPherson the win.

In addition to Bardin’s 2-for-4 night, Kiefer Davis was 3-for-4, and McPherson was 2-for-3.

Rains (3-2) and Commerce (2-3) were rained out on Tuesday, while Community lost to Royse City and joins Quinlan at 1-5.
