Lady Tigers Warm Up For Playoffs
The Lady Tigers finished a perfect district record, and secured a first-round bye for the playoffs with a 20-0 win over Community on Friday night.
The team awaits the winner of Lake Worth and Hillsboro, but TAKS testing will delay the second round of the playoffs until the weekend of May 1.
Macy Unger got the final start of the regular season and pitched a one-hit shutout of Community, striking out four.
The run support overflowed beginning with the first at bat when the Lady Tigers posted seven runs. Jana Deen, Taylor Austin, Jayla McEnturff, Taylor Parker, Alex Smith and Shelby Perry all had multiple extra-base hits.
The Lady Tigers hosted 4A Hillcrest, the 13-4A district champions, for a warm-up game on Monday night.
Taylor Austin, with excellent defense behind her, pitched a one-hit shutout for six innings against the 19-2 Hillcrest squad.
In the bottom of the sixth, with score tied 0-0, Macy Unger drew a walk and eventually scored on a passed ball, giving the Lady Tigers the lead with one at-bat remaining for Hillcrest.
Two-hits and a pair of miscues in the field led to three runs for the visitors, however, and the Lady Tigers lost for the first time since February 23.
"This was a good warm-up game for us," coach Iyhia McMichael said. "A game like that shows us where we’re at.
"I thought the girls handled it well, and made excellent adjustments to a really good pitcher. The defense was good for the most part. That was a good team to face to prepare for the playoffs."
