Multiple Child Assault, Sex Charges Jail Couple From South Hunt County

By Larry Briscoe, Editor

A stack of indictments by a Hunt County Grand Jury charge a South Hunt County couple with multiple acts of indecency, injury and sexual assault to children.

Charles Duane Mayo Jr., 38, and Misty Laverna Mayo are named in indictments that charge crimes against five different boys.

The husband and wife are both in the Hunt County Jail in lieu of almost a million dollars in bonds each. They listed a Terrell address, located southwest of Quinlan.

Three of the alleged victims were under 14 years old and two were younger than 17 years old. The charges span times from July 15, 2007, to Sept. 15, 2008.

The charges were all filed Friday, Jan. 22, in 196th Judicial District Court and were moved to 354th Judicial District Court. Both defendants pleaded innocent to all charges on Friday. Attorneys were appointed to represent them.

An earlier indictment, filed Oct. 23, 2009, named Charles Duane Mayo Jr. and charged him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon – family member. That indictment claims Mayo on Oct. 7, 2008, "did intentionally or knowingly threaten imminent bodily injury to Misty Mayo, a family member, and the defendant did use or exhibit a deadly weapon during the commission of the assault, to-wit: a knife…"

Court records indicate he was held in Kaufman County Jail on that charge and pleaded guilty in county court on Jan. 12, 2009. The record states he was given 120 days in jail on the charge.

Four counts were filed against both Mayos that involved a boy under age 17. Count one charges indecency with a child on July 15, 2007, and counts two, three and four charge sexual assault of a child on or about May 15, Aug. 15 and Sept. 15, 2008.

On a second boy, younger than 14, injury to a child was charged. Charles Duane Mayo Jr. was charged with counts that included choking in around the neck on or about May 15, 2008, causing his arm to be burned with a cigarette on or about June 15, 2007, striking him with a belt on the back and/or legs and/or buttocks on or about July 15, 2008, and poured alcohol on him and set it on fire on or about July 15, 2007.

Misty Laverna Mayo was also charged with causing bodily injury to the boy on July 15, 2008, by striking him with a belt, and by pouring alcohol on him and setting it on fire on July 15, 2007.

A third boy, under age 14, injury to a child was charged. The male Mayo was charged in three counts that included a claim on May 15, 2008, that he choked him around the neck. Count II states he struck him with a belt on the back, and/or legs and/or buttocks, and Count III states that he poured alcohol on the boy and set it on fire on July 15, 2007.

Misty Laverna Mayo was charged with injury to a child in connection with the same boy. The indictment claims she struck him with a belt on the back and/or legs and/or buttocks on May 15, 2008, and poured alcohol on him and set in on fire on July 15, 2007.

Four counts were filed against both defendants in connection with a fourth boy, under age 14. Indecency with a child was charged in Counts 1 and 3 in alleged incidents on/or about Aug. 15, 2008, and on/or about Sept. 15, 2008.

Aggravated sexual assault of a child was filed against both in alleged incidents on Sept. 1, 2008, and Oct. 1, 2008, in Counts 2 and 4.

In connection with the fifth boy, under age 14, two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child were filed against both Mayos in connection with two separate alleged incidents.

Charles Duane Mayo Jr. was also charged in another indictment with assault with a deadly weapon in two counts in connection with the second boy.

The indictment claims Mayo used a knife on/or about June 20, 2008, to cause bodily injury "…by poking him in the back with said knife…" The second count charges Mayo used a chainsaw on/or about July 20, 2008, to "…intentionally and knowingly threaten (name withheld) with imminent bodily injury by the use of said deadly weapon."
