Kempson Named QISD Girls Athletic Coordinator

Staff Writer

Phil Kempson of Whitewright has been named the new Quinlan ISD Girls Athletic Coordinator and Head Basketball Coach.

Kempson has served as a head basketball coach for 12 years, with a career record of 291-97 representing a .750 overall winning record. His career district record sits at 98-18 for a .840 district winning record.

Kempson has been named Coach of the Year seven times and he has won eight district championships.  Eleven out of 12 years, Kempson’s teams have qualified for the playoffs.

Kempson’s focus for the Quinlan Ford girls program will be to rebuild.

"Coming to Quinlan is a good move for me and my family.  I am excited and look forward to the opportunity to work with the kids in QISD, and to offer all that I can to have a competitive girls athletic program," he said.

Kempson is not new to Quinlan ISD, as he is a 1990 Ford High School graduate.

Kempson received his bachelor of science in History and Physical Education from East Texas State University in 1995. He later completed his student teaching at North Mesquite HS before his first coaching assignment at Quinlan Ford in 1996-97 as an assistant varsity boys coach.

From 1997-2002, Kempson served as Boles High School Girls Athletic Coordinator and Head Basketball Coach. He then moved on to Whitewright where he has coached since 2002.

Kempson’s playoff record includes:

2001-2002 — Boles girls basketball — regional semi-finalist and district champions, District Coach of the Year award.

2002-2003 — Whitewright girls basketball — regional quarterfinalists and district champions, District 13-AA Coach of the Year award.

2005-2006 — Whitewright boys basketball — regional quarterfinalist.

2006-2007 — Whitewright boys basketball — state semifinalist, 30-5 and 14-0 district record, No. 4 state ranking, Sherman Herald-Democrat All-Texhoma Coach of the Year, best season in wins and playoff advancement in 30 years for Whitewright.
