Boles Hornets Face Big Sandy

Terry Britt, Staff Writer

Boles will look to get 2010 started on a winning note tonight (Friday) as the Hornets host Big Sandy at 7 p.m.
Boles Head Coach Gordon Jordan will be relying on his players to come out of the gates effectively against a Wildcats squad that boasts 18 returning lettermen, including seven offensive and eight defensive starters.
However, he said all the concentration in practice this week has been on his team.
“We are focusing on us still, our game notes, our keys to victory. We are going to have to outwork them and out-prepare them, and if we do that, it will put us in a situation to win,” Jordan said.
Big Sandy will not make it easy. The Wildcats feature a stout playmaker in tight end Lafredric Scott, big and fast at 6-2, 220 with 4.8-seconds speed.
The Wildcats also have a big offensive line, anchored by 6-4, 282-pound Landon Whitten.
“Whitten also plays nose guard, so I assure you that our center knows he has his work cut out for him,” Jordan said.
“You can’t just expect one person to block him all the time…We will not be able to play man coverage on him and drive him off the ball,” he added.
On Scott, Jordan noted, “His legs are huge and we know they are going to try to get the ball to him on their short passing game, and then also look to send him downfield as a deep threat as well.”
Defensively, Big Sandy has many solid performers, led by defensive lineman Michael Green and defensive back James Ellis.
The Hornets will counter with an attack led by running back Lane Sutton and quarterback Michael Jordan.
Linebackers Johnathan Lewis and Justin McLain will be called upon for a big opening night against a tough opponent. Lineman Brant Sims and Jacob Isom at defensive end could also provide big plays up front.
Big Sandy may have the edge in experience, but the Hornets have four offensive and four defensive returning starters in skill positions, Jordan said.
The head coach added that he hopes to see some snap difficulties in practices and pre-season scrimmages get ironed out quickly.
“It’s probably going to be an ongoing thing until it is fixed. We’ve been taking extra snaps trying to what we can to prepare them,” he said. “We hope to have fewer turnovers than they do.”
Jordan also said solid play from special teams could be crucial in dictating the outcome of the season-opener.
“You don’t want your special teams to kill you. You’ve got to be simple but sound with that.”
